Jason Bolden Shares His Secrets for Effortless ’90s-Inspired Style
The polished, understated luxury of the ’90s is making a strong return this fall—and celebrity stylist Jason Bolden has a few tips for getting the look without going overboard.
Think Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy: sleek slip dresses, straight-leg denim, soft cashmere sweaters, structured leather bags and outfits that look effortlessly elegant rather than overly styled.
That timeless aesthetic is at the center of Bolden’s collaboration with Quince. The celebrity stylist, whose clients include Cynthia Erivo, Sabrina Carpenter, Michael B. Jordan and Nicole Kidman, created a collection built around versatile fall essentials such as washable silk, cashmere, corduroy, leather and easy layering pieces.
The goal, according to Bolden, isn’t to recreate every trend from the decade. Instead, it’s about bringing back the simple, refined staples that have remained stylish for decades.
“You don’t need to completely change your wardrobe to capture the look,” Bolden explained. For him, the key pieces include a classic slip dress, great straight- or wide-leg jeans, a cashmere crewneck and a structured leather bag.
But the biggest styling lesson from the ’90s may be knowing when to stop.
“The ’90s taught us that a few beautiful pieces worn with confidence beat a head-to-toe trend every time,” Bolden said.
He also recommends keeping accessories minimal. Rather than layering multiple pieces, choose one statement item that can transform the entire outfit.
“One bag, one shoe or one piece of jewelry can change the entire look,” he explained. A simple combination of a knit sweater and trousers, paired with a structured leather tote and polished loafers, can create a more elevated effect than an outfit overloaded with accessories.
Bolden also believes that silk doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. A long silk maxi dress, for example, can easily become an everyday fall staple.
He recommends styling one with a lightweight knit draped over the shoulders, simple strappy shoes and a quality leather bag for an effortless daytime look.
For Bolden, that combination perfectly captures the relaxed luxury he loves.
“My grandmother used to say, ‘Real luxury is leisure, Jason,’” he shared. “And a silk maxi you can run errands in is exactly that.”
The takeaway? You don’t need a completely new wardrobe to embrace ’90s-inspired elegance. A few timeless pieces, thoughtful styling and a little restraint can make even the simplest fall outfit feel effortlessly chic.
